Smoky Man, the mad italian behind the ALAN MOORE: PORTRAIT OF AN EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN book to which I contributed a small piece, has organised an auction selling off much of the specially-created artwork in the book. As with the book, all profits are being donated to charities researching Alzheimer’s disease.

There’s a page with more details over at Pulse.

As you can see, the site’s had an extensive overhaul, not least of which is what you’re reading right now; yes, I’ve finally succumbed and started a blog.

It’s mainly so I can post small updates and pointers on the status of book releases, works in progress and so on without having to compose a newsletter. More significant announcements will be duplicated, appearing both in the newsletter [UPDATE: No longer active] and here. The main advantage of handling smaller updates like this is the minimal amount of time it requires of me, compared to the old hand-coding method of updating both the front page and each book’s individual page.

Given that this is the first entry, then, let’s have a recap:

- The collected edition of THREE DAYS IN EUROPE is now available for pre-order, solicited in this month’s PREVIEWS catalogue on page 313, in the Oni Press section. The book will contain the complete original series, all of the “prequel” Sunday Comics from Oni’s website, a sketchbook from Mike, and – because you quite literally demanded it – translations of the French dialogue scenes. [EDIT: I've just been informed that the book will also contain an 'evolution of a page' feature showing how a page goes from script, through roughs and pencils, to finished art]

To pre-order your copy from a comic store, give them order code SEP032442. To pre-order from a bookstore, give them ISBN 1-929998-72-4.

- Issue #1 of ALAN MOORE’S YUGGOTH CULTURES AND OTHER GROWTHS will be on sale in a few weeks – my contribution to this issue is ZAMAN’S HILL, adapted from a short prose piece by Alan, and illustrated by Juan Jose Ryp (who also drew ANOTHER SUBURBAN ROMANCE). Issue #1 also features the long-lost NIGHTJAR strip by Alan and Bryan Talbot, and more. Each issue of YUGGOTH CULTURES weighs in at 40 pages; issues #2 and #3 can both still be pre-ordered.

- I’ve all but finished scripting SPOOKED, and Ross is gaining fast on the art front. I saw the pencils for the first half of the book a while ago, and they already look amazing; then I found out Ross is intending to give the whole book a black/grey ink wash, which just gives me more impetus to finish the thing.

- JULIUS is getting talked about a lot, which is nice. I’m sure I can’t be the first person to have done Shakespeare-as-gangsters, but this one – especially the sneak peeks of Brett’s artwork – seems to have caught many people’s imagination. Another one I’ve almost finished scripting, though frankly I expect choreographing the last act to be… challenging.

- The script for CLOSER was finished a couple of months ago, now, and Mike and Leanne are ploughing into it. I’ve only seen a couple of finished pages, but editor James Lucas Jones has apparently seen more, and insists they’re all as lovely as the ones I’ve seen.

- I’m about halfway through writing the Vivid Comix stuff, which has been fun so far. It’s almost liberating, in a way. I am now siding firmly with Steven Grant’s comment that it’s really not that dissimilar to writing superhero books, just without the cod morality.

- Another Big And Scary Job landed on my desk from Avatar a few weeks ago. That’s all the clues you’re getting for now.

- Ongoing Avatar Series No 1 is going slower than expected, which is a shame simply because I can’t wait to see people’s faces when they hear what it is. Ongoing Avatar Series No 2 is conversely moving very quickly, despite being greenlit six months later than No 1.

It’s a funny old game, this comics lark.
