Travelling Man, the excellent UK chain of comic/game stores, is twenty years old this week. Which is kind of amazing. TM have been very good to me — one of my first signings was at their York store almost ten years ago, and they’ve been a strong supporter of my work ever since.

Anyway. Naturally they’re having a party to celebrate, held tomorrow, Friday August 5 at the Fab Cafe in Leeds. Predictably fellow scribe, psychonavigator, and all-round boogie lover Kieron Gillen is DJing.

Perhaps not as predictably, so am I.

Kieron and I — plus, I assume, the other creators attending such as Andy Diggle, Leigh Gallagher, Barry Kitson, Moore + Reppion, etc — will also be doing a short signing around 7pm, before moving on to the important business of tunes and booze.
All disco dance must end in broken bones.

Now, unless you happened to live in Bath in the late ’90s, and attended the tiny goth/metal clubs therein, this will be your first chance to, erm, experience my DJing. Though not the last — assuming I don’t get lynched tomorrow, I’m also doing a set at this year’s Thought Bubble Festival.

So do pop along if you can. Should be a great laugh.

I’ll be appearing at the Manchester MCM Expo on Saturday 30th, i.e. in two days’ time. The Manchester show is a new offshoot of the MCM London event, which I’ve attended several times, and thoroughly enjoy. Also, Manchester is local to me, and I’m all for encouraging cons that don’t require a five-hour train journey…!

Like the London event, MCM Manchester will have a Comic Village, where I can be found at Table C9. Look for the big red banner with my name on it. You’ll also find great creators like John McCrea, Leigh Gallagher, Al Davison, Marc Ellerby and more in attendance.

(I have no idea what, if any, panels are taking place or whether I’ll be on them. Right now I’m operating under the assumption that I’ll be at the table all day.)

MCM Manchester takes place at Manchester Central (the old GMEX) on Saturday 30th July, from 9.30am – 5pm. Hope to see you there.

As predicted last year, I’ll be attending San Diego Comic-Con next week. I’m looking forward to catching up with a whole bunch of people I haven’t seen since 2009, and propping up the late night bar as ever.

I’ll be signing for both Oni and Marvel, and also sitting on Marvel’s SPIDER-MAN panel on Friday, to talk about Shang Chi’s role in SPIDER-ISLAND.

N.B. I’m going to be running round like a madman all weekend, and by Sunday I’ll be on my way back to Blighty — so to get something signed, or just have a chat, the appearances listed below are the only times you can be certain to catch me.

Here’s my schedule, with times and booth/room numbers.

Thursday

12.00-12.45: Oni Press, #1833
4.00-5.00: Marvel, #2329

Friday

11.00-12.00: Marvel, #2329
1.45-2.45: Marvel Spider-Man Panel, Room 6DE
6.00-6.45: Oni Press, #1833

Saturday

10.00-10.45: Oni Press, #1833
3.00-3.45: Oni Press, #1833

…And that’s about all you’ll hear from me until after I return. Hope to see you there!

DAREDEVIL #512 goes on sale this week — alongside SHADOWLAND #5, and together they round out the main storylines of the Shadowland event (All that remains is SHADOWLAND: AFTER THE FALL, an epilogue which goes on sale next week).

Years of acting as the Guardian Devil of Hell’s Kitchen have taken their toll on The Man Without Fear. Hell’s Kitchen lies in ruins, and it is up to the people of New York to start anew and begin rebuilding. In this last chapter of his story, will Matt Murdock at last find final redemption for the events of SHADOWLAND?

This was a hell of an issue to write, and even a little emotional at the end. The issue code is SEP100605, and I hope you all enjoy it.

A quick round-up of other news:

Sega have announced BINARY DOMAIN, a new videogame from the creators of the Yakuza series, to be released in 2012. So now you can probably guess why I was in Tokyo earlier this year…

— While I was down in London for Thrilling Wonder Stories II, I made time to pop in and be interviewed for the We Are Words + Pictures show on London Fields Radio, talking to host Michael Leader about comics, games, writing, and heavy metal, though not necessarily in that order. It was a great show, with a fantastic playlist (biased, moi?) and some lovely coffee to boot. You can hear it online at Mixcloud, download it from the WAW+P site, and read Michael’s show notes at his own blog. You can also follow WAW+P on Twitter.

— Finally, the guys from Geek Syndicate filmed me hawking my wares at the recent Thought Bubble, all in the pursuit of naked capitalism. (Wish they’d told me one of my collar points was askew, but you can’t have everything…)

Settle in, lot going on this week:

POST-BUBBLE

Thought Bubble was great, as always. How many shows end with a full-on (and, come to that, full) dancefloor? Thanks to everyone who came out to see me, and everyone who decided to try out WASTELAND — by mid-afternoon Saturday, every single copy of the first volume, both in paperback or hardback, had been snapped up either from me or one of the retailers. A good problem to have.

Old friend Al Kennedy, one half of the excellent podcast House To Astonish, recorded interviews at the con for their 50th anniversary show; in addition to myself, he also spoke to Jamie McKelvie and Kieron Gillen (in a much less noisy and chaotic environment, the lucky sods). You can listen to the podcast here.

ON SALE: 1

SHADOWLAND: BLOOD ON THE STREETS reaches its climax with issue #4. I’ll let the solicit do the talking:

It’s the chilling climax for the odd squad of Misty Knight, Paladin, Silver Sable and The Shroud! The unlikely quartet believe they’ve uncovered the real villain behind the mob murders. But the truth is even more shocking than they realize! To lay a trap for the death-dealing ninjas, the four fearless fighters must execute a daring plan, coming together to face off against The Hand…and one of them must face an ugly truth! Don’t miss this explosive, dark and bloody conclusion!

BLOOD ON THE STREETS has been a blast to write; one of the good things about working with second (and third!) string characters is that you have so much more freedom, precisely because they’re second string. I’ll miss them.

The order code is SEP100606, and you can read a four-page preview at Comic Book Resources.

ON SALE: 2

DEAD SPACE: SALVAGE is also out this week.

Illustrated by the inimitable Christopher Shy, SALVAGE is an original graphic novel that reveals what happened to the USG Ishimura after the events of DEAD SPACE, and its unfortunate discovery by a group of illegal miners…

The USG Ishimura, the most famous of the Planetcracker class starships, is flung from orbit around Aegis VII after the disastrous events of Dead Space. It is lost somewhere in deep space, and both the Government and a powerful religious sect called “Unitology” believe it may still hold the Red Marker, an alien artifact that promises great power for either side, and both will stop at nothing to reach it first!

Lots of cool new characters, a few twists, and some events that reveal just a little more of the grand tapestry that is the DEAD SPACE universe. Good stuff, and you can get a sneak peek at preview art on the DEAD SPACE Facebook page.

The order code is SEP100397 for comic stores, or the ISBN for bookstores and online is 978-1600108150.

THRILLING WONDER STORIES

Finally, I’ve been invited to appear at this year’s Thrilling Wonder Stories, which takes place at the Architectural Association in London on Friday.

This is an event that also features Will Self, Jeff Vandermeer, Paul Duffield, and other frighteningly talented people, and has alumni including Warren Ellis, Ian Macleod and Jim Rossignol. Heaven knows what they want me there for. Nevertheless, I’ll be talking about WASTELAND, the building in stories, the stories in buildings, and the Mystery of the Unopened Door.

Entrance is free, but limited; but even if you can’t make it to the venue, you can watch a livecast of the entire event at the AA website.

…And that’s all she wrote (also, most definitely all I’m writing) until I return from London.

If it’s November it must be Thought Bubble, Leeds’ very own one-day comic con, this coming Saturday (20th). Leeds is my local city, and Thought Bubble is a great and well-run con, so I always enjoy attending.

(In recent conversation with Sean Phillips, himself an ex-local, I suddenly realised I’m one of the closest creators in Britain to the con. Given that I live an hour’s drive away, and the size of Leeds itself, that’s quite bizarre.)

— I’ll be signing and selling all day (apart from one panel appearance; see below) at a table in the main hall. There are no table numbers per se, but as with MCM Expo, simply look for the big red banner with my name on it. Alternatively, you could listen out for perpetual troublemakers Gillen and McKelvie, who’ll be on an adjacent table.

N.B. This is my last planned convention until San Diego next year, and I’m running low on stock of many books, particularly WASTELAND collections and my Collected Scripts book. If you want to buy a signed copy of something, this will be your last chance for some time; and in the case of some older books, possibly your last chance ever.

— At 12:45pm I’m on the Comic Culture Panel, hosted by Gillen and accompanied by Paul Cornell, Rob Williams and Tony Lee one other unconfirmed*, in which we’ll allegedly talk about comics’ pervasive influence on wider culture. I say allegedly because every single one of those panelists, myself included, is a chatterbox waiting to strike. If we stay on topic for more than ninety seconds, it’ll be a miracle.

Hope to see you there!

*UPDATE: Sadly, Tony Lee has had to pull out of the con owing to other commitments. Presumably, someone equally garrulous will step in for him…

I’m attending London MCM Expo this weekend, and once again I’ll have my own table in the Comic Village area, to sign and sell you stuff all weekend — including copies of WASTELAND: THE APOCALYPTIC EDITION Vol 2, and COLLECTED SCRIPTS Vol 1.

Apparently I’m on table C46. That may not help much, because the aisles probably won’t be labelled, but the Village is a small enough area that you can cover the whole thing in about ten minutes — if you’re looking for me, just keep an eye out for the big red banner with my name on it. Seriously, you can’t miss it.

I’ll be at the table all day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the following caveats:

Friday

— I may not be on the floor before around 3pm (doors open at 2pm). I’ll do my best, but I can’t guarantee it.

Saturday

— At 2pm I’ll be on stage, taking part in the third Writers v Artists showdown, in which the Writers will attempt to retain our flawless record. SRS BSNS.

— At 5pm I’m on stage again, this time as part of the Writers Panel. Alongside me will be Kieron Gillen, David Hine, Paul Cornell, Si Spurrier, and Chris Claremont. Stick that in your word processor and smoke it.

Sunday

— I’m returning home Sunday evening, and I have to pack up my table before yomping all the way back to King’s Cross, so there’s a good chance I’ll be gone before the show floor closes. If you want to catch me on Sunday, don’t leave it till the last minute.

See you there!

I’m heading to the States for a week, first to speak at GDC in Austin, and then straight to the New York Comic Con, where I’ll be signing throughout the weekend.

I’m really looking forward to the con, not least because this will be the first time I’ve set foot in New York for almost exactly ten years. Yep, the last time I was in town was before 9/11. Unreal.

If you’re a WASTELAND fan, don’t forget that we’ll have copies of the Apocalyptic Edition, Vol 2 for sale, including some ultra-rare handbound black cloth editions. And DAREDEVIL fans should pay attention to Saturday in the following schedule:

Friday

5.00 – 5.45 Oni Press (booth # 2331)

Saturday

12.15 – 1.00 Oni Press (booth # 2331)

3.30 – 4.30 DAREDEVIL signing with Andy Diggle at Midtown Comics (booth # 2143)

4.30 – 5.00 Oni Press (booth # 2331)

Sunday

10.15 – 11.00 Oni Press (booth # 2331)

And don’t forget the Oni press panel at 1.15, which will be worth attending just to see the riot break out when everyone realises Bryan O’Malley isn’t there. Fun times.

If you’ll be at the show, please stop by and say hi!

It’s that time of year when everyone is posting their San Diego Comic-Con schedules, and I’m no exception… normally. Except this year, I won’t be going.

No great conspiracy or anything, here — I’ve attended SDCC every year for what feels like forever, and I do enjoy it, but I simply want a year off from the exhausting long haul travel1 and hullabaloo. I don’t have anything significant to promote, or panels to appear on, so this is as good a year as any.

Doubtless I’ll be back in 2011. And later this year I’ll be attending GDCOnline, New York Comic Con, MCM Expo and Thought Bubble, all in the space of about seven weeks. So, there’s that.

1 Travelling to SD takes me the best part of 24 hours — 13 hours in the air, plus another 4-6 hours getting to/from/around airports, through US immigration, and so on. It’s… not a pleasant journey at the best of times.

As previously mentioned, I’m attending Thought Bubble in Leeds this Saturday. If you don’t know it, TB is fast becoming one of the premier comic conventions in Britain — it’s comics-focused, creator-friendly, and very well organised.

You can view the full programme here (the one-day con is part of a larger festival over three days), but here’s the relevant info for me:

  • The con is in Saviles Hall, at the Royal Armouries, from 10am till 5pm.
  • I’ll have a table, where I’ll be signing and selling my books, including WASTELAND hardcovers and COLLECTED SCRIPTS. I don’t have a booth number for you, but Saviles isn’t so big that you won’t be able to find me if you just look around for the big red banner with my name on it. [ADDENDUM: Apparently my table number is 22.]
  • My erstwhile partner in crime Ben Templesmith will also be there, at the table next to mine, and we’ll be more than happy to jointly sign any DEAD SPACE or WASTELAND stuff you might have.
  • At 12.45 Ben and I are both on the Do Zombies Read Comic Books? panel, along with Charlie Adlard, Sean Phillips and host Martin Grund, discussing the horror genre in comics.
  • At 3.20 I’m on the Computer Games and Sequential Art panel, this time with Duncan Fegredo, Peter Doherty, Liam Sharp and host Kieron Gillen, to discuss the links between games and comics.
  • I’ll also be at the after-show party in the evening, where Al Ewing, Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie are all DJing at some point. Bring your dancing shoes!
  • Two other brief snippets of news today: First, there’s a very nice review of WASTELAND up at sci-fi site io9.com.

Second, as you may have already heard, I’m co-writing DAREDEVIL #505-507 (“Left Hand Path”) with Andy Diggle. We’ve wanted to work together on something for a long time, and now we finally have the chance. More on that soon, no doubt.
