17th January 2006 / Rosemary's Backpack / Free Stuff
I’m just finishing the book design for the new edition of ROSEMARY’S BACKPACK, the cover of which is over there on the right. As you can see, Drew’s done some brand new cover art for this edition. In fact, the entire book has been redesigned from scratch. Scott Brown’s even relettering it.
The new Speakeasy edition will be solicited soon - 144 pages for $12.99, the same price as the original Cyberosia edition - and I’ve created a batch of wallpapers with the new cover art to replace the old versions. Like all the wallpapers I’m making now, a 1440×900 version is also available for those of you with widescreen monitors. You can find them, along with all my other wallpapers, at the downloads page.
1st July 2005 / Julius / F-Stop / The Long Haul / Closer / Spooked / Free Stuff
I’ve just updated the desktop wallpapers available to download from this site. There’s a new set of F-STOP wallpapers, thus:
…Which also includes a widescreen version for those of you with Cinema Displays or similar widescreen monitors. In the same spirit, I’ve also created new widescreen versions of the existing wallpapers for THE LONG HAUL, JULIUS, SPOOKED and CLOSER.

18th May 2005 / F-Stop / Free Stuff / On Sale
F-STOP is in stores today, all 168-pages-for-only-fifteen-dollars of it, and you should buy it immediately to prevent the collapse of Western society. And if you have no social conscience, the nice folks at Oni have now supplied a free preview PDF of the first twenty-five pages, free and online, for you to read at your leisure, online, for free. And what’s more, at no charge.
You’ll find the PDF here.
7th March 2005 / The Long Haul / Free Stuff / Interviews
The last of the online previews for THE LONG HAUL is up at Comic Book Resources. Even if you’ve seen the other previews, you should check this one out as CBR is the only site running Chapter Four in all its glorious 28-page entirety, alongside another short interview with me. This is the last preview before the book goes on shelves this Wednesday.
Also up is another advance review, this time from Jog The Blog:
“Johnston holds up his end of the bargain; probably the key to this sort of story is the execution of the heist itself, and it’s a pretty involving one here, filled with sleeping drugs and disguises and seduction and threatening gasses and telegraph tomfoolery.”
4th March 2005 / The Long Haul / Free Stuff / Interviews
Newsarama is the next site to post a preview of THE LONG HAUL - the preview is the same as that on Pulse, but they also link to an interview with me conducted last year, when the book was originally solicited.
And there’s another advance review online today, this time by Dorian at Postmodernbarney, one of the few comics blogs I always make time for. Probably due to Dorian’s impeccable taste:
“This was a fun book, and I enjoyed it tremendously. It combines the best elements of a good crime caper story with a Garner-esque Western comedy. And the creative talent is great as well […] A more than welcome addition to the ranks of quality Westerns.”
1st March 2005 / The Long Haul / Free Stuff / Interviews
As promised, we’ve organised some online previews of THE LONG HAUL, which goes on sale next week (March 9th). First to the table is The Pulse, with a 12-page preview (of finished, lettered pages) and a short interview about what went into the book, and what you can expect to get out of it. Yee and, indeed, Haw.
26th October 2004 / The Long Haul / Free Stuff
There’s some new desktop wallpaper for THE LONG HAUL in the downloads section, for anyone who wants to gaze at Eduardo’s linework all day. And who wouldn’t?
13th August 2004 / The Long Haul / Free Stuff / Links
Here it is - a four-page preview of THE LONG HAUL which first appeared in the Oni “preview ashcan” at San Diego this year, now online at CBR. This is going to be a beautiful-looking book.
10th August 2004 / Julius / Free Stuff
Here’s one for you if you’re a budding comics writer, enjoy peeking behind the scenes, or are just plain nosey… The script for Act I of JULIUS is now online, hosted by the fine folks over at Scryptic Studios.
It’s in PDF format, so you’ll need Acrobat reader to view it.
8th July 2004 / The Long Haul / Free Stuff
Sadly, I’m not attending the San Diego Comic-Con this year. But if you are, look out for the Oni Press ‘convention ashcan’, which will contain a small preview of THE LONG HAUL.
It’s a completed, fully inked and lettered sequence from the first chapter, and Eduardo’s artwork looks amazing. But it won’t be available anywhere online until after the convention, so be sure to drop by the Oni booth and pick up a copy to see for yourself.
