2nd June 2005 / Nightjar / On Sale

At long last, NIGHTJAR #4 is in comic stores everywhere today (Some stores may have received it last week, but everywhere will have it this week). And in a nice bit of serendipity, I finished writing the last issue of Book Two, now titled Blood and Fire, yesterday.

The collection of Book One will be released alongside the start of Book Two. Max Fiumara is working on another book inbetween, and then we’re planning to get a lot more in the can before we start Book Two, in order to avoid the lateness problem we had with this first series. So expect to see Book Two sometime in 2006.

9th May 2005 / F-Stop / Nightjar / Interviews

Let’s start the week with some good news:

First, F-STOP will be in stores everywhere on May 18th. If you’re lucky enough to shop at a store close to a distribution centre, you may even get it this week, but I have no idea which stores that might be. It’ll definitely be everywhere on the 18th, though.

Second, I’ve just proofed the final, lettered pages for NIGHTJAR #4, and now it’s on its way to the printers. I don’t know exactly when that means it’ll be in stores, but now it’s in the production channel it should be pretty soon.

And finally, something I should have mentioned last week, but it slipped my feeble little mind: there’s a “Readers ask the questions” interview with me over at Comic Foundry. CF is a site for aspiring comic creators, and I gather mine is just the first in a series of similar interviews they’ll be doing with creators. If you’re at all interested in the process of creation and writing, or an aspiring creator yourself, you may find it quite interesting.

5th January 2005 / Julius / Spooked / Nightjar

Greg McElhatton includes JULIUS in his ‘Best of 2004′ list over at iComics.com.

As for me, I’ve just returned from visiting family and friends over the holidays. Now I’m looking forward to knuckling down with a whole load of new work in 2005. I’m halfway through NIGHTJAR Book Two; I’m planning on writing the second book of SPOOKED (titled LOW SPIRITS) this year; I’m also considering a sequel to JULIUS; and I have two pitches currently on the boil, which I’ll tell you more about if they get picked up. So that lot should take me through till about spring, I reckon…

The more perceptive among you will also have noticed that the tail-end of 2004 hit me with a rather bad rash of latebookitis. I wish I could tell you more about when THE LONG HAUL, NIGHTJAR #4 or YUGGOTH CREATURES #2 were coming out, I really do. But until I hear definite dates from the publishers, I simply can’t. What I can do is promise that I’m taking steps to make sure it doesn’t keep happening in 2005.

Here’s to a happy and prosperous year for all.

24th November 2004 / F-Stop / The Long Haul / Nightjar / Interviews

There’s a new interview with me today on Broken Frontier, conducted by James Powell. It’s quite an interesting one - James asked some very good questions, and although the chat was ostensibly about F-STOP and THE LONG HAUL, he also encouraged me to talk a little about my work habits and how I approach this wacky business of writing the comics. Good stuff.

In other news, I wrote a three-issue miniseries last week, and now I’m piling into another six issues of NIGHTJAR. I do wish they’d hurry up and perfect cloning.

8th November 2004 / F-Stop / The Long Haul / Nightjar

The last couple of weeks have been a time of finishing. The F-STOP script is finished, the Big Secret Avatar Project is finally done, and the LONG HAUL book design is finalised in anticipation of the final art.

But, as with all endings, it’s really just a new beginning - or rather, a batch of new beginnings. I’m starting Book Two of NIGHTJAR (tentatively titled Inferno), there’s a hush-hush miniseries for Oni, and a one-off for a Rather Large Publisher which I’m hoping will lead to bigger things. Not to mention a couple of pitches I need to get finished soon. Ideally, all of this should be written by the end of December…

I suppose I should start thinking about Christmas shopping, too. Gah.

19th October 2004 / Nightjar / On Sale

Quick reminder - as previously mentioned, NIGHTJAR #3 is on sale tomorrow. If you can’t find it in your store, you can ask them to order it using the code MAR042303.

9th October 2004 / Closer / Spooked / Appearances / Nightjar

I’ve been invited to do a “Horror/Hallowe’en” signing at Travelling Man York on October 30th, which is the Saturday just before Hallowe’en. We’re still finalising the details (including what time I’ll be there from, but “afternoon” is probably a safe bet…) but the date is confirmed, and I’ll definitely be there.

I expect the store will have some kind of tie-in promotion, most likely a discount on my horror books, and I’ve also decided to run my own competition to win signed copies of SPOOKED, CLOSER and NIGHTJAR #1. So if you’re in the area, pop along and say hi.

(ADDENDUM: The start time has now been confirmed as 2pm. Officially I’ll be there from then till 5pm, though I may well stick around a bit longer if people are still coming by.)

4th October 2004 / Nightjar / On Sale

I’ve just been told that NIGHTJAR #3 will be in stores on October 20th. Yes, it’s very late, and I’m as frustrated as anyone by that. On the bright side, Max’s art continues to go from strength to strength, and I hope you’ll agree it’s worth the wait.

29th July 2004 / Alan Moore / Nightjar / On Sale

Update: According to the release list, it seems both NIGHTJAR: HOLLOW BONES and YUGGOTH CREATURES #1 should be in stores at this very moment. How’s that for service?

29th July 2004 / F-Stop / The Long Haul / Closer / Nightjar

Well, the house move is finally done and over with. In truth we moved almost a fortnight ago, but the weeks surrounding that move were filled with renovation, decoration and other boring real life things ending with “-ion”, so the Electric Space Interweb took somewhat of a back seat. Now that we’re in and (mostly) finished, though, it’s back to work.

First up is a rather nice post-San Diego review of CLOSER at Ain’t It Cool News, by someone who definitely seems to have ‘got it’. (I do wish people would stop using the advance cover design, though.)

[Edit: it seems the AICN review actually links to the image on Oni’s website, which is also still the advance cover. Which it’s hardly unfair to expect would be the correct version. So, my apologies to AICN.)

NIGHTJAR #2 came out somewhere in June, though you’ll only have seen the wraparound cover featured on the Diamond shipping lists for some reason. I haven’t seen any reviews of it yet, but I was very happy with it myself. Max did a great job of bringing the rather bleak setting of Pendle hill to life. I believe the NIGHTJAR: HOLLOW BONES one-shot should be in stores very soon, and I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of reaction the “flashback story” gets.

YUGGOTH CREATURES #1 should also be in stores any day now, though scheduling always becomes a bit chaotic when American convention season rolls around, so I’ll be double-checking that with Avatar.

So, what next? Well, I’m still ploughing through the Big Avatar Thing that I returned to working on back in June, and I have scripts to finish for F-STOP and THE LONG HAUL. Besides that, though, a few new things have come up over the last few weeks which - now that San Diego is over and I finally have a study I can work in without worrying the walls are going to collapse on me - I can start cracking on with. I should hopefully have at least two pieces of very good news before Autumn.
