9th June 2004 / F-Stop / The Long Haul / Closer / Nightjar / Interviews

I’m currently working on the Big Avatar Thing I mentioned toward the end of last year, which will keep me occupied for a few months at least, and I’m also moving house (again, but hopefully for the last time) in the next few weeks, which means my Net access will be limited. So here’s a quick round-up:

NIGHTJAR #2 will be out next week. Due to the delay in producing this one, it looks like the HOLLOW BONES one-shot will actually then come out between #2 and #3, so as to be published in time for the summer US convention season.

CLOSER should also be out next week - my editor saw final press proofs yesterday, so the presses should be rolling as I write this. He said it looked great, which is a relief. Hope the horror buffs among you like it.

YUGGOTH CREATURES appears to be catching the interest of quite a few HPL fans, even those not overly familiar with comics, which is nice. I’ve just completed an interview with online comics zine CBEM about the book, too.

Speaking of interviews, there’s a reasonably large article about me appearing in next month’s VAMPIRELLA MAGAZINE, focusing mainly (and not surprisingly) on my horror work. I think it’s the largest print interview I’ve ever done, so keep an eye out for it.

Besides the Big Avatar Thing, work continues apace on THE LONG HAUL and F-STOP, and the shape of Book II of SPOOKED is finally starting to coalesce in my head. I’m also working up a couple of new ideas which have got me quite excited - one of them is shaped around a story I’ve wanted to write in some form or another for about the last fifteen years…

28th May 2004 / Nightjar

Just finished another couple of short “interlude” stories for NIGHTJAR - one comic strip, one prose story. Like First Feathers, both are set in the past and delve a little deeper into the history of Mirrigan and the Demdyke family, in this case from 1974 and 1953. Both stories will feature in a one-off “NIGHTJAR Annual”, planned for release some time between the first and second story arcs.

And on that note, a quick update on the status of NIGHTJAR #2; as those of you with calendars will have noticed, it’s rather late. This is due to unforeseen circumstances, and I apologise to those of you waiting for it. However, it’s now at the printers, and will be on shelves very soon - I’ll let you know exactly when, and I hope you’ll agree that it was worth the wait. We’re also doing everything we can to make sure the rest of the series is more timely. Thanks for your patience.

26th April 2004 / Nightjar

I spent the weekend finishing a prose story for inclusion in this year’s NIGHTJAR convention special, HOLLOW BONES, which was solicited last month and will be on sale shortly after #4 of the first miniseries.

The story’s called “First Feathers,” and recounts the story of a young girl named Demdyke who arrives in New York… in February 1919, right at the birth of the roaring twenties. At 10,000 words it’s one of the longest prose pieces I’ve ever written, and I’m very pleased with it.

It also means HOLLOW BONES will be fully half brand new material, along with some ‘behind the scenes’ stuff such as Max’s design sketches and my script for issue #1. Lovely stuff.

30th March 2004 / Nightjar / Interviews

Comic Book Resources have just posted a preview of NIGHTJAR #1, with all the covers and five pages of the interior story for you to see. The book ships this Wednesday, March 31.

19th March 2004 / Alan Moore / Nightjar

Release date news from Avatar: The HYPOTHETICAL LIZARD preview book is now going to ship on March 24th (i.e. next week), a month earlier than expected. And NIGHTJAR #1 is now confirmed for March 31st. (Addendum: seems the two-book hardcover slipcase edition of THE COURTYARD collection is also going to ship on the 24th. It never rains…)

17th March 2004 / Nightjar

I’ve just seen the whole of NIGHTJAR #1, finished and lettered. It looks very nice indeed, and Avatar’s production department has done a superb job considering how particular some of my requests for the lettering and design were… It’s scheduled to ship on March 31st. Can’t wait.

11th February 2004 / Nightjar / Interviews

Another NIGHTJAR interview went up today, this time at Newsarama. This one’s much more focused on the working process, and my past Moore adaptation work than the previous interview at CBR. This in turn led to some interesting questions - and, hopefully, answers.

7th February 2004 / Alan Moore / Nightjar / Pre-order

I have two books avilable for pre-order in this month’s catalogue, both from Avatar Press:

In NIGHTJAR #2 (order code FEB042136), Mirrigan tries to have a normal Halloween celebration on Pendle Hill with an old friend, before setting off on her quest for revenge. But one of Blason’s agents is already on Mirri’s tail, and when the fanatical Reverend Brown hears there’s a Demdike on the hill things go from bad to worse…

Also solicited is a preview book for THE HYPOTHETICAL LIZARD (order code FEB042134), another adaptation of an Alan Moore novella. Contrasting the reality of human love and emotion with the fantasy world of Liavek, LIZARD is one of Moore’s best-loved prose works and was nominated for a World Fantasy Award in 1998.

14th January 2004 / Nightjar / Interviews

There’s a new NIGHTJAR interview with me up at Comic Book Resources today, conducted by Jonah Weiland. It’s pretty comprehensive, covering both the questions you’d expect with regards to ‘taking over’ a book from Alan, and some left-field ones about the field of horror in general. Worth a look.

11th January 2004 / Julius / Nightjar / Pre-order

I have two books in the new PREVIEWS catalogue for pre-order, both for publication in March (and both featured on the Diamond Previews website, which is nice)…

JULIUS is on page 312 of the catalogue, listed under Oni Press. It’s a 160pp digest-sized book costing $14.95 (i.e. the same format as SPOOKED), and the order code for comic shops is JAN042612.

NIGHTJAR #1 (of 4), meanwhile, is on page 217, listed under Avatar Press. It’s a regular-sized, 32-page comic costing $3.50, and the order code for comic shops is JAN042157.
