5th February 2008 / Dead Space / Wasteland / Novels / Interviews
A big interview with me is now up over at Comic Book Resources, talking about WASTELAND, DEAD SPACE, writing novels and more. I should probably point out that it was originally conducted in November 2007 (!), so there’s no mention of the WOLVERINE manga, despite a question at the end which would have been perfect…
5th April 2007 / Novels / Stealing Life / On Sale
It’s like buses, isn’t it? You wait for a book to be released, and then three come along at once…
The US edition of STEALING LIFE is now available. Run, don’t walk, to your nearest bookstore - or Amazon, natch - and grab yourself a copy. No prior reading in the Dreams of Inan universe required, promise.
23rd March 2007 / Novels / Stealing Life
There’s a positively glowing review of STEALING LIFE over at Ookami right now. What a lovely way to to end the week:
16th March 2007 / Wasteland / Novels / Stealing Life / On Sale
I was hoping to be able to tell you that STEALING LIFE is today made available in the US, but I can’t seem to get confirmation of it, and Amazon are still showing it as pre-order (despite also showing the publication date as yesterday). So it might be out, or it might not. Sorry.
On a brighter note, I’ve almost finished writing WASTELAND issues #11 through #13, the climax to the second major arc. All very exciting.
Speaking of which, you should really hop on over to Ben Templesmith’s livejournal and take a look at the cover for WASTELAND #11 he’s just painted. Gorgeous stuff, and perhaps his best WASTELAND cover yet.
Finally, here’s something that stopped me in my tracks a couple of days ago - copies of WASTELAND selling for absurd amounts on eBay. Go figure.
22nd January 2007 / Wasteland / Novels / Stealing Life / On Sale
Just a few quick items today:
- There’s a new interview with me about WASTELAND, conducted by Jay Cochran for Comic News International.
- WASTELAND #6 goes on sale this Wednesday in America, Thursday in Europe. ‘DYING FREEDOM’, the final issue of the first major story arc. Nasty things happen.
- STEALING LIFE also goes on sale this week, but only in Europe. The American edition will probably be out in spring or summer. Available from all good bookshops, and probably some shoddy ones, too.
6th January 2007 / Wasteland / Alex Rider / Novels / Stealing Life / Anthologies / Texas Strangers
Meet the new year, same as the old year… Except, of course, it’s not. In fact, it’s going to be very different indeed. Thus:
WASTELAND will continue through the year. Issue #7 is called CHILDREN OF THE SUN, a stand-alone story featuring the drafting talents of Carla Speed McNeil - author of FINDER and one of my favourite creators. After that we head into the second major arc with #8, entitled RUSTY CAGE. I’m just wrapping up the script for #10 now, wherein a few tasty clues and tidbits get revealed. And, of course, there’s a fight.
In addition to last month’s WIZARD listing (which I still haven’t seen. Bah), WASTELAND was just named as one of the top 10 books of 2006 by Matt Price in the Daily Oklahoman. WASTELAND is still doing well, still performing beyond mine and Chris’ expectations, and the near-term future at least looks secure. I am now writing a bona fide ongoing series. Which is weird, but good.
STEALING LIFE goes on sale in just a few weeks, which is also going to be weird but good, mainly because the core audience of Abaddon’s line is of course 2000AD fans, who have absolutely no idea who I am. PJ Holden owes me a drink, if that makes any difference…
TEXAS STRANGERS debuts in March. What’s weird about this experience; it’s the first time I’ve co-written, my first book through Image, my first regular book for children, and also my first regular book in colour. However, once again; weird… but good. Dan and I are finishing the script to #3 this month.
The second Alex Rider graphic novel, POINT BLANC, will be released some time later in the year. STORMBREAKER is already my most successful book ever, outselling even my Alan Moore adaptations. Weird, but… good. Exactly.
And I’m about to sign a contract to do a series that could be even more crazy, if it all comes off. I don’t like to talk about stuff that isn’t ready to be announced, so I’m not going to bore you. But this one is really weird.
I’ve also agreed to do a short story for volume 2 of 24Seven, the robot-themed anthology created by Ivan Brandon. My story is an existential tragedy about the futility of struggling for immortality. Yeah, I know. Working title is SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE.
Finally, I sweartagawd that I will write another novel this year. Probably BLACKGUARD, if I can sink my teeth into it for a good few weeks.
Oh, and I have a deconstructionist comic miniseries called KILLING DEAL that keeps bubbling to the surface. So you might hear about that, too.
Hope you had a good 2006. Here’s to a better 2007.
11th October 2006 / Novels / Stealing Life
Abaddon have released full details for STEALING LIFE, the fantasy novel I’ve written for their Dreams Of Inan series. That’s the cover on the right, by 2000AD stalwart Mark Harrison.
If you’ve read A KIND OF PEACE, the first Inan book by Andy Boot, you’re in for a bit of a surprise with STEALING LIFE. Where PEACE was epic, mystical and global in scale, LIFE is street-level and noir-ish, with more of a focus on high tech and the pulp roots of the Abaddon line. It’s full of sleazy characters, corrupt politicians and dirty deeds done dirt cheap.
STEALING LIFE will be 320pp (roughly the same as the other books in the Abaddon line), priced £6.99 ($7.99 US) and go on sale January 2007 in UK bookstores. I assume the US release will follow a month or two afterwards, but if I hear any different I’ll let you know. The Abaddon launch titles have apparently done rather well - here’s hoping that continues so I get chance to write the sequel, STEALING ICE…
29th August 2006 / Wasteland / Novels / Queen & Country / Stealing Life
Hmmm, been a while. I’m knee-deep in deadlines, so here’s a quick rundown:
- I finished the script for WASTELAND #7 today. Look out for an announcement concerning that issue in the next week or two - should be interesting to see the reaction…
- I’m about to hand in the final manuscript of STEALING LIFE. It’s been fun, if exhausting (never write two novels at the same time…) and, glutton that I am, I already have an idea for a sequel: STEALING ICE. I should have a cover to show you soon.
- The new book to write I mentioned previously will be from Image, it’ll be specifically for kids and teens, and will launch early next year. We have a team, a story and a schedule; what we don’t have is anything to actually show yet, which is why that’s all I’m saying for now. Full announcement soon.
- Merchandise time: we returned from San Diego with a few limited edition WASTELAND T-shirts left. Here’s one (no, I’m not the model):

We have L, XL and XXL, but only a few of each. They’re available exclusively from the Oni Press online store for $22 US. And for a limited period they’re giving away #1 of my QUEEN & COUNTRY DECLASSIFIED series, as drawn by WASTELAND artist Chris Mitten, with every T-shirt. Bargain!
31st May 2006 / Wasteland / Alex Rider / Alan Moore / Novels / Appearances / Interviews / Stealing Life
A few things to tell you about today, so let’s dive straight in:
First, issue #4 of The Hypothetical Lizard goes on sale in the US today, completing the series. LIZARD is the last of my Alan Moore adaptations you’ll see for a while - but not the last to appear, by any means. As ever, watch this space…
There are also a couple more features and interviews in the world of podcasting for you to check out:
cIndy Center (geddit?) interviewed both myself and WASTELAND artist Christopher Mitten recently for separate, consecutive shows. Both shows featured questions from fans on the cIndy Center message board, and even questions from Chris and myself to each other. Lots of fun. You can get the podcasts here through iTunes, or download them separately from the cIndy Center website: here’s mine, and here’s Chris.
There’s also a quasi-interview with me in episode #10 of Secret Identity, talking not just about WASTELAND but also roleplaying games, my favourite comics and more. This was conducted by Secret Identity sending me questions, to which I recorded my answers separately. I was a little worried about how that would play out, but it actually sounds great, and hosts Brian and Matt had some really interesting discussion off the back off my responses. Once again, you can download it through iTunes or direct from Secret Identity’s website.
Finally, a work update: I’m over halfway through both POINT BLANC and STEALING LIFE. (Both are going well, but to anyone considering writing a full-length graphic novel and prose novel at the same time, I offer the following advice: don’t. It’ll drive you insane.) I’m also preparing to write issue #7 of WASTELAND, which will be a bit of a special issue with a surprise to boot; and I’ve just accepted a place in a very interesting comics anthology due next year. I’ll be able to tell you more about both of those later.
Finally finally, I can confirm I’ll be at San Diego Comic-Con this year, mostly attending the Oni and Avatar booths and, of course, the bar. We’ll have a limited edition WASTELAND T-shirt for sale at the Oni booth, and if all goes to plan I should also have a brand new series to announce. Fun fun fun.

Just a quickie - the website for Abaddon Books, publishers of STEALING LIFE, is now live. And very pretty it is too.
