The hardcover collection of SHADOWLAND: BLOOD ON THE STREETS goes on sale this week.

This is another “premiere hardcover”, like the DAREDEVIL: SHADOWLAND edition (I’ve now seen a copy of that book, and it’s a lovely package) and comes to around 100pp, collecting the entire miniseries.

As far as I know, none of the issues are available digitally as yet, but if you didn’t see the series when it first came out, you can read an advance feature about it here, and a preview of the first issue here, both at CBR.

SHADOWLAND: AFTER THE FALL goes on sale this week, a final epilogue to the Shadowland event, and a coda to last week’s DAREDEVIL #512.

It’s illustrated by Roberto de la Torre and Marco Chechetto, with each artist taking on a separate strand of the story. Lovely stuff.

Here’s the solicit…

Shadowland Ends — but who is the victor? After the senses-shattering conclusion of Shadowland, can the people of Hell’s Kitchen rebuild without a champion to guide them? The future of Marvel’s street heroes begins here!

…Which doesn’t tell you much at all, so listen: AFTER THE FALL is a story about Ben Urich and Detective Kurtz, and the effect of Daredevil’s fall from grace on the city. Both men want to locate Matt Murdock; and both want to know what happened inside Shadowland, though for very different reasons. But the answers they get may not be what they want to hear.

The issue code is OCT100585, and you can read a five-page preview at Comic Book Resources.

DAREDEVIL #512 goes on sale this week — alongside SHADOWLAND #5, and together they round out the main storylines of the Shadowland event (All that remains is SHADOWLAND: AFTER THE FALL, an epilogue which goes on sale next week).

Years of acting as the Guardian Devil of Hell’s Kitchen have taken their toll on The Man Without Fear. Hell’s Kitchen lies in ruins, and it is up to the people of New York to start anew and begin rebuilding. In this last chapter of his story, will Matt Murdock at last find final redemption for the events of SHADOWLAND?

This was a hell of an issue to write, and even a little emotional at the end. The issue code is SEP100605, and I hope you all enjoy it.

A quick round-up of other news:

Sega have announced BINARY DOMAIN, a new videogame from the creators of the Yakuza series, to be released in 2012. So now you can probably guess why I was in Tokyo earlier this year…

— While I was down in London for Thrilling Wonder Stories II, I made time to pop in and be interviewed for the We Are Words + Pictures show on London Fields Radio, talking to host Michael Leader about comics, games, writing, and heavy metal, though not necessarily in that order. It was a great show, with a fantastic playlist (biased, moi?) and some lovely coffee to boot. You can hear it online at Mixcloud, download it from the WAW+P site, and read Michael’s show notes at his own blog. You can also follow WAW+P on Twitter.

— Finally, the guys from Geek Syndicate filmed me hawking my wares at the recent Thought Bubble, all in the pursuit of naked capitalism. (Wish they’d told me one of my collar points was askew, but you can’t have everything…)

Settle in, lot going on this week:

POST-BUBBLE

Thought Bubble was great, as always. How many shows end with a full-on (and, come to that, full) dancefloor? Thanks to everyone who came out to see me, and everyone who decided to try out WASTELAND — by mid-afternoon Saturday, every single copy of the first volume, both in paperback or hardback, had been snapped up either from me or one of the retailers. A good problem to have.

Old friend Al Kennedy, one half of the excellent podcast House To Astonish, recorded interviews at the con for their 50th anniversary show; in addition to myself, he also spoke to Jamie McKelvie and Kieron Gillen (in a much less noisy and chaotic environment, the lucky sods). You can listen to the podcast here.

ON SALE: 1

SHADOWLAND: BLOOD ON THE STREETS reaches its climax with issue #4. I’ll let the solicit do the talking:

It’s the chilling climax for the odd squad of Misty Knight, Paladin, Silver Sable and The Shroud! The unlikely quartet believe they’ve uncovered the real villain behind the mob murders. But the truth is even more shocking than they realize! To lay a trap for the death-dealing ninjas, the four fearless fighters must execute a daring plan, coming together to face off against The Hand…and one of them must face an ugly truth! Don’t miss this explosive, dark and bloody conclusion!

BLOOD ON THE STREETS has been a blast to write; one of the good things about working with second (and third!) string characters is that you have so much more freedom, precisely because they’re second string. I’ll miss them.

The order code is SEP100606, and you can read a four-page preview at Comic Book Resources.

ON SALE: 2

DEAD SPACE: SALVAGE is also out this week.

Illustrated by the inimitable Christopher Shy, SALVAGE is an original graphic novel that reveals what happened to the USG Ishimura after the events of DEAD SPACE, and its unfortunate discovery by a group of illegal miners…

The USG Ishimura, the most famous of the Planetcracker class starships, is flung from orbit around Aegis VII after the disastrous events of Dead Space. It is lost somewhere in deep space, and both the Government and a powerful religious sect called “Unitology” believe it may still hold the Red Marker, an alien artifact that promises great power for either side, and both will stop at nothing to reach it first!

Lots of cool new characters, a few twists, and some events that reveal just a little more of the grand tapestry that is the DEAD SPACE universe. Good stuff, and you can get a sneak peek at preview art on the DEAD SPACE Facebook page.

The order code is SEP100397 for comic stores, or the ISBN for bookstores and online is 978-1600108150.

THRILLING WONDER STORIES

Finally, I’ve been invited to appear at this year’s Thrilling Wonder Stories, which takes place at the Architectural Association in London on Friday.

This is an event that also features Will Self, Jeff Vandermeer, Paul Duffield, and other frighteningly talented people, and has alumni including Warren Ellis, Ian Macleod and Jim Rossignol. Heaven knows what they want me there for. Nevertheless, I’ll be talking about WASTELAND, the building in stories, the stories in buildings, and the Mystery of the Unopened Door.

Entrance is free, but limited; but even if you can’t make it to the venue, you can watch a livecast of the entire event at the AA website.

…And that’s all she wrote (also, most definitely all I’m writing) until I return from London.

DAREDEVIL #511 goes on sale today. Owing to vacation time and other deadlines, technically speaking I didn’t co-write this issue, so you won’t see my name on the cover. But of course it’s still part of the overall arc which Andy and I plotted together, and we did a joint dialogue pass before the issue went to press, so I doubt most people will notice.

This is the penultimate issue of ‘In The Shadows’, and of course the penultimate issue of DAREDEVIL itself, before everything changes at the start of next year. I’ll be back with Andy for the final issue, #512 — and then I’m writing an epilogue, SHADOWLAND: AFTER THE FALL (which is still under wraps, so no details to announce yet).

Back to this week’s issue, here’s the solicit text:

Hell’s Kitchen has exploded into rioting, looting, and all-out chaos, and Daredevil is responsible for it all. As the leader of the Hand and controller of Hell’s Kitchen, Matt Murdock knows that conquest of New York is within his grasp. But one of his oldest friends goes to Shadowland, to make one last attempt to save the Man Without Fear from walking the path from which there is no turning back.

The order code is AUG100584, and you can read a five-page preview at Comic Book Resources.

The third issue of SHADOWLAND: BLOOD ON THE STREETS goes on sale today. As you can see from the cover, Misty Knight and Silver Sable feature quite a bit in this one, but never fear — both Paladin and The Shroud get plenty of page-time, too. It’s all thundering to a conclusion…

As Shadowland continues to spread across New York City, the strange bedfellows finally come together — each struggling to solve the mystery of the Hand murders! The killing spree shows no sign of stopping, but the ninja’s latest victim is an unusual choice, and casts doubt among our heroes! Will their differences and mistrust keep them apart? Or can they work together to cut through the mystery before it’s too late… and before one of them becomes the next target?

The order code is AUG100591, and you can read a five-page preview of the issue at Comic Book Resources.

A day late owing to labor day in the US, and as predicted last week, two of my books are now on sale.

First is DAREDEVIL #510, by Andy Diggle and myself:

As New York City crumbles under the weight of Matt Murdock’s new order, his former friends and allies struggle just to hold their lives and world together. But as the pressure builds, Foggy Nelson will make an alliance no one saw coming — while Black Tarantula takes a stand against Daredevil… and learns the consequences of crossing the Man without Fear.

Order code is JUL100568. You can read a preview here.

And next is the second issue of SHADOWLAND: BLOOD ON THE STREETS, the critically-acclaimed tie-in series.

Silver Sable… Paladin… Misty Knight… The Shroud! Four very different heroes, all ensnared in a mystery spinning out of Shadowland! Is Daredevil using The Hand to kill mobsters untouchable by the law? Or is something even more sinister spreading throughout the city? Each hero approaches the puzzle from a different angle, and now they must race to discover the truth… but The Hand has other ideas, and time is running out! Can this quartet of strange bedfellows put their differences aside and come together before death strikes again?

Order code is JUL100572. You can read a preview here.

And don’t forget that if you missed BOTS #1 (because it sold out), there’s a second printing on its way next week, order code JUL108023.

Looking at this journal lately, you could be forgiven for thinking all I’m working on is DAREDEVIL. Not true at all — in the past few months I’ve written a videogame, a YA novel trilogy proposal (yes, that one, at last), plotted and begun scripting a new arc of WASTELAND, and pitched an entirely new series to Marvel. Oh, I also wrote a Shadowland epilogue called AFTER THE FALL, about which more later.

But I can’t talk about any of that other stuff yet, which kills me, because it’s all pretty cool stuff. DD and Shadowland, on the other hand, are in high gear right now.

Which is a long-winded way of saying, yes, it’s time for more previews: Newsarama has a big lettered preview of DAREDEVIL #510 and BLOOD ON THE STREETS #2, which both go on sale next week. Enjoy.

Some nice news about SHADOWLAND: BLOOD ON THE STREETS today (well, technically yesterday, but it was very late here in England when the news broke…!).

First, issue #1 has sold out, and gone back to a second printing. So if you missed out, and now want a copy of this second edition, you’ll need to give your comic retailer the new order code of JUL108023.

Meanwhile, issue #2 will be out in a couple of weeks, and Marvel have released an advance sneak preview of some lovely artwork.

Finally, reviewers said some very complimentary things about issue #1…

“Some of the best writing I’ve seen… This is definitely a series worth reading.”Tor.com

“Johnston finds plenty of opportunity for strong character work… Silver Sable and Misty Knight stand out in particular.”IGN

“Johnston brings his A game yet again… [he] delivers a Perfect 10 story.” — Cosmic Book News

“Blood On The Streets is my favorite part of Shadowland.”Fantastic Fan Girls

…All of which makes me very chuffed indeed. The full news article is available here.

No kidding. Today (tomorrow in Europe) sees the release of not one, not two, but three DAREDEVIL and SHADOWLAND-related books.

First up is DAREDEVIL #509, by Andy Diggle and myself:

As Daredevil’s Shadowland stronghold in Hell’s Kitchen grows, more heroes step forward to try to bring The Man Without Fear back to his senses. But any foe of Daredevil knows he is not a man easily stopped. The battle for New York continues!

Order code is JUN100577.

Next is the premiere issue of SHADOWLAND: BLOOD ON THE STREETS, a noir street-level miniseries by me:

Striking from the pages of Shadowland, four cult-favorite heroes rise into the spotlight: Silver Sable… Paladin… Misty Knight… The Shroud! Is a rogue faction of Daredevil’s ninjas secretly targeting the mafia? With DD’s dark castle looming over the city, has The Man Without Fear finally lost his mind? This twisted murder mystery ensnares a quartet of vastly different operatives–but will it unite them, or place them in each other’s crosshairs? Can this controversial crew put aside their differences before a war between The Hand and the mob sets New York ablaze?

Order code is JUN100581.

And finally, we have the latest DAREDEVIL paperback collection, THE DEVIL’S HAND, which contains issues #501-#507 (so all of Diggle’s run thus far, including the ‘Left Hand Path’ arc which I co-wrote) and the DARK REIGN: THE LIST one-shot. Essentially, everything you need to catch up on current Daredevil events, and Shadowland itself.

Order code is JUN100683, or ISBN 978-0785141136.
